I found these drinks at a local shop for a dollar each. While I had heard of the name before I couldn’t remember where except as being affiliated with a YouTube channel. While they are labeled as an energy drink, I noticed they have nootropic ingredients that help with focus and memory. Since they didn’t have the usual energy boosters you would find in drinks like Monster or Red Bull I picked them up to give them a shot. The results were mixed.
The 8 main ingredients that are in each can include:
1000mg acetyl-l-tyrosine
400mg alpha GPC
200mg caffeine
200mg uridine monophosphate
100mg l-theanine
15mg saffron extract
200mcg huperzine A
100% essential vitamins
Out of these ingredients I recognized caffeine, alpha GPC, and l-Theanine. While I am familiar with saffron, I didn’t know it could be used as an extract.
Gorilla Mind comes in four flavors; Black cherry vanilla, arctic white, orange rush, and exotic kiwi. In my opinion the best flavors were black cherry vanilla and arctic white due to the other two lacking any real flavor and reminding me of knock off sodas.
The first drink I tried was the arctic white. This was on a weekend and I drank it half way through the day when I might need a boost even though I am already taking nootropics like Alpha Brain and 10 grams of creatine per day. I had already enjoyed a productive morning and afternoon and wanted to know if Gorilla mind would help. I flew through the evening doing just as much as I had accomplished in the first half of the day. I finished the evening reading a book that I had been working through and before bed flipped the last page of Jim Gant’s One Tribe at a time. The crash at the end of the day was expected with the caffeine. So far Gorilla Mind was a thumbs up for me.
The next three days I tried it did not have the same effect. Perhaps it was because I was going to work, or the events of the previous days had me in a stressed-out state. I don’t know what was the cause but after drinking Gorilla Mind and driving to work I found myself yawning and feeling sluggish. My mind was focused but physically I wasn’t there. This same experience repeated for three days with the same results. Why that first day was different I couldn’t tell you. Diet and exercise was the same for each day.
While I have a positive position on nootropics I don’t know if combining them with an energy drink is the way to go. In theory I could see where this is a great idea but having tried it for myself I don’t know if I would have them again. I still have a few cans left and will give them a shot but 3 out of 4 so far is not a positive result. The $1 I paid for them was a decent price for trying them out but if I found them at the local store for their regular price of $3 I don’t think I would pick them up.
